Situational awareness refers to a pilot's understanding and awareness of their surroundings, the current situation, and the potential risks and threats. It is the ability to perceive, comprehend, and predict the environment around the aircraft, as well as to make accurate decisions and take appropriate actions based on that understanding.
Situational awareness is critical as it helps the pilot to detect and respond to potential threats, identify opportunities, and avoid hazards. It requires the pilot to maintain constant vigilance and to gather and process information from a variety of sources, including onboard sensors and systems, communications with controllers, and visual observations of the environment.
Effective situational awareness can be improved through training, experience, and the use of advanced technologies and systems, such as radar, electronic warning receivers, and moving map displays. By building a comprehensive and accurate picture of the situation, pilots can make better decisions and operate safely and effectively in complex and dynamic environments.
